Beaufort & the Southern Outer Banks

Beaufort & the Southern Outer Banks

Located along North Carolina’s central coastline, Beaufort and the Southern Outer Banks beckon vacationers year-round. Steeped in history, the famous pirate Blackbeard plied these waters in the 1700s, Robert E. Lee designed Fort Macon’s jetties in the 1840s, and in 1971 President Theodore Roosevelt’s descendants donated the land on which the North Carolina Aquarium was built.

We’ll explore Beaufort, named by Travel + Leisure as “America’s Favorite Town”. Rich in history, architecture, and maritime culture and almost surrounded by water wherever we go, the salt air will invigorate as we immerse ourselves in this enchanting coastal community.

Description

Join us for an immersion experience into the unique geography, history, and culture of North Carolina’s central coastline.

As we journey to Beaufort, we’ll stop for a picnic lunch at the area’s beautiful Visitors Center overlooking Bogue Sound in Morehead City. A formal introduction to the area awaits us after lunch.

At the epicenter of North Carolina’s coastal and marine sciences research, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University all have a presence in the area. We’ll visit one of these university facilities engaged in the study of the state’s coastal ecosystems and marine life.

Located in Beaufort, our hotel overlooks Taylor’s Creek and the Rachel Carson Preserve. Late afternoon cruising aboard a 45-foot catamaran is just a short walk from our hotel. The gentle breezes of Taylor’s Creek will ease us into a relaxed state of mind for our visit to this delightful town.

During our full day of exploration in Historic Beaufort, we’ll learn about North Carolina’s 3rd oldest town, its boat building and fishing heritage, and the advent of its tourism economy. We’ll visit the NC Maritime Museum, Watercraft Center, and enjoy a narrated tour of Historic Beaufort aboard a red double-decker bus. There will be ample time to stroll the charming waterfront and shop.

On Day 3 we’ll leave Beaufort, cross the Intracoastal Waterway and visit Fort Macon, North Carolina’s 2nd most visited state park. After lunch, the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area and the NC Aquarium will stir imaginations around the area’s rich flora and fauna populations.

Culinary adventures await us as we dine in picturesque settings sampling local seafood and chef’s delights. With free time to leisurely stroll the harbor front, this travel experience is the perfect segue into summer. Join us for an unforgettable escape to Beaufort and the Southern Outer Banks, another North Carolina gem.
