The Albemarle-Pamlico peninsula in eastern North Carolina boasts serene beauty, rich wildlife, and a storied cultural history that serves as the backdrop for visit NC concierge’s 2022 holiday adventure.
Our first stop on this three-day tour is The North Carolina Estuarium in Washington. With more than 200 exhibits celebrating the thousands of square miles of estuaries that lie inside the state’s barrier island shoreline, this North Carolina treasure will educate and inform laying the foundation for exploring the region.
Our immersion experience into the life and culture of the Inner Banks continues in the afternoon with a lecture by regional agricultural historian Paul Lilly who will introduce us to the “History of the Blacklands,” a common moniker referring to the region’s rich black soil.
Nothing announces winter and the holiday season in eastern North Carolina more than seeing and hearing the migratory waterfowl traveling the Atlantic Flyway. Stopping over at Lake Mattamuskeet and across the rich ecosystem of the Albemarle-Pamlico peninsula, this annual pilgrimage is a sight to behold for locals and visitors alike. Late afternoon offers prime time viewing and we will explore some of the region’s noted sites as we make our way toward Edenton.
Historic Edenton, situated on the northern shore of the Albemarle Sound, will be our home away from home. Newly renovated and reopened this summer, two adjacent historic bed & breakfast properties in the heart of this charming town provide our lodging.
Day 2 will be spent exploring Edenton via a narrated trolley tour, on foot, and perhaps in a horse drawn carriage. Edenton was North Carolina’s first colonial capital (1722-1743). 2022 marks the 41st anniversary of the Edenton Christmas Candlelight Tour, a self-guided walking tour of private homes that are rarely open to the public. Each house will be decorated according to this year’s theme “Lights, Camera, Christmas!” Following the tour we’ll enjoy a private chef catered dinner.
Day 3 will take us to Lake Mattamuskeet, the largest natural freshwater lake in North Carolina. Covering about 40,000 acres, it is a favorite wintering spot for more than 200 species of migratory waterfowl. Well prepared for this visit by the lecture given by Dr. Lewis Forrest, Executive Director of The Mattamuskeet Foundation, we’ll continue to learn more on our visit to the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge.
As we head west toward Raleigh we’ll visit Somerset Plantation which offers a comprehensive and realistic view of 19th century life on a large North Carolina plantation. Originally, this unusual plantation included more than 100,000 densely wooded mainly swampy acres. Over the span of 80 years as an active plantation, hundreds of acres were converted into high yielding fields of rice, corn, oats, wheat, beans, peas, and flax. Sophisticated sawmills turned out thousands of feet of lumber. By 1865 Somerset Place was one of the upper South’s largest plantations.
This unique immersive holiday experience along North Carolina’s Inner Banks is filled with natural beauty, rich wildlife, cultural history, and the magic of the holiday season. Don’t miss it!
