Home to Salem College, the country’s oldest women’s college, and Wake Forest University, the vibrant city of Winston Salem is known for its arts and innovation. Our immersion experience begins with a visit to the Saw Tooth School for Visual Art, the premier community art school in the Triad. The building began life in 1911 as the Hanes company’s first hosiery factory. Its iconic design is unforgettable.
Did you know that the R.J. Reynolds headquarters building in downtown Winston Salem was the inspiration for the Empire State Building? This art deco building has recently been infused with new life as The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel. We will have our lunch and tour this incredibly historic building where the titans of industry helped to shape our state’s history in the early part of the 20th century.
The highlight of our day will be Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern at Reynolda House. Reynolda House was the family home of Katharine and R.J. Reynolds and houses one of the finest collections of American Art in the entire country, and is celebrating its 100th anniversary with this outstanding exhibit. Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern is the largest exhibit ever hung at Reynolda House. Included are not only works by the artist, but also photographs and personal clothing. The exhibit opened at the Brooklyn Museum and its stop in Winston Salem is its only stop in the South. The exhibit will be staged not only in the exhibition hall, but throughout the Reynolds family home.
At the conclusion of our 90-minute guided tour of Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern, there will be time to explore the gardens and/or walk to Reynolda Village with its shops and eateries before boarding the motor coach for our return to Raleigh.
