Heading northeast from the Triangle, our destination is the Roanoke River Valley, an area settled in the early 1700s by colonists moving south from Virginia. We’ll learn about the prosperity of the Roanoke River Valley on our guided tour of the Historic Halifax Site which includes exhibits and 18th and 19th century dwellings.
The town of Halifax cemented its place in North Carolina’s history on April 12, 1776 with a document known as the “Halifax Resolves”, which was the first official action by an entire colony recommending independence from England.
After lunch we’ll re-board the bus for a short drive to Scotland Neck to visit the Sylvan Heights Bird Park, home to the world’s largest collection of waterfowl. Dedicated to conservation, education, research and training, Sylvan Heights Bird Park is designed to give visitors an unforgettable up-close experience with over 2,000 waterfowl, parrots, toucans, flamingos, and other exotic birds from around the world.
