Beginning our immersion experience into North Carolina’s dynamic capital city with a driving tour lays the foundation for understanding the evolution of this vibrant city. Raleigh’s original city plan (drawn in 1792) was modeled on that of Philadelphia, with a central square and four main streets extending like the points of the compass. Our driving tour of the city’s core will provide the framework for our exploration of museums, galleries, government and historic sites, as well as the thriving commercial and business district.
Our first stop will be the North Carolina Executive Mansion & Gardens.* Built in the late 19th century, the North Carolina Governor’s Mansion is one of the finest examples of Queen Ann Victorian architecture in the state. Native materials – bricks molded from Wake County red clay, oak and heart pine, sandstone and marble – were used throughout the construction of this 35,000 square foot residence that has been home to 30 governors. Designed by prominent architect Samuel Sloan, the mansion is one of the state’s architectural gems and is filled with fine 18th and 19th century North Carolina furnishings and art. Situated on 4.6 acres in the heart of downtown Raleigh, it is the 3rd largest governor’s residence in the United States.
Upon leaving the mansion, we’ll continue to explore the city stopping on North Carolina State University’s campus. Then, continuing west, Meredith College’s campus comes into view, followed by the North Carolina State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Returning downtown, we’ll visit one of the city’s co-working spaces,** where the whole concept of “the office” is being redefined. Your immersion experience into North Carolina’s Capital City will inspire and invigorate you, whetting your appetite to return to the city to see more!
